My Thoughts on… The Oscar Nominations.

Hey guys!

Sorry for the lack of post in the past week! I know I said ill post but its been a tough week for me mentally. But no matter as I’m back now and I’m going to speak about the Oscar Nominations!

Now here is how its going to work, Im not going to speak about all of them in detail only 3-4, however at the end of this post I shall have a list of the choices I have made. So without further ado lets get started!

Now as you know the Oscars are a massive milestone in the film industry and for a film or person to be nominated is a massive deal. For me as a film student the Oscars is something I look forward too and can never miss. The list came out Tuesday 24th January and there were definitely some surprises in store. Like I said im going to mention 3-4 in detail then have a list for you all at the end!

Now I haven’t seen every single film that’s been nominated, I have seen a majority. I am going to make my choices based on the films I have seen.

Best Film Editing.
Contenders: Arrival -Hacksaw Ridge – Hell or High Water- La La Land –Moonlight

Now for those that know me they know I have a keen interest in the post production sector of film and TV. In particular I am interested in becoming an editor. So the nominations for Best Film Editing is something of great interest to me. Now out of these films I have seen Arrival, Hell or High Water and La La Land. I haven’t seen Moonlight or Hacksaw Ridge (Though the latter I am seeing in the morning!)

Now for these I am going to only take into account the films I have seen. Now don’t get me wrong I Loved Hell or High Water and La La Land. However my choice for this has to be Arrival. There was something about this film especially the editing that was so precise and beautifully done. Usually after a film I can point at a flaw or two. With this I couldn’t. The editing was always done perfectly and made sure the film stayed on course. The inclusions of just brief snapshots of flashbacks through editing too was incredible. Arrival has to take this one without a doubt.

Best visual effects
Contenders: Deepwater Horizon – Doctor Strange -The Jungle Book- Kubo and the Two Strings- Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Again having an interest in the post production side of film and TV, I also have a keen interest in visual effects. So its no surprise I would speak about Visual Effects after the Film Editing Nominations! Now in this category the only film I haven’t seen is Kubo and the Two Strings.

Now this category is a tough one, all of these were great in terms of visual effects but if were all being honest with one another its ‘The Jungle Book’ that takes this one. This film in terms of visual effects is great. Especially when you realize the entire film was comprised of visual effects even the jungle aspect of the movie. When you find this out youll watch the film with a better appreciation trust me.

Jon Favaru and the entire visual effects team should be bloody proud of themselves. They did a fantastic job.

Best actor
Contenders: Casey Affleck (Manchester By the Sea) – Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge) – Ryan Gosling (La La Land) – Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic)
Denzel Washington (Fences)

Now I have only seen Manchester by the Sea and La La Land in this category and I’m seeing Hacksaw Ridge Tomorrow. however, I have to talk about this category because it really is going to be a tough one. Based on on reviews and what social media is saying everyone on this category deserves the Oscar.

Now I would love to say that Andrew Garfield or Ryan Gosling is going to win this one as personally they are two of my favorite actors. Gosling purely shined in La La Land and Garfield is fantastic in both Hacksaw Ridge and Silence. Yet if I’m being realistic about this I think its clear to us all that Casey Affleck has this one in the bag.

Affleck’s performance in Manchester by The Sea is mesmerizing. He really does shine in this movie. His performance tugs at the heartstrings and had me in tears in certain scenes. You really sympathize for his character. I really think he has this Oscar in the bag. As much as I would love Gosling or Garfield to win this one. I will be very shocked if Affleck doesn’t take this.

Contenders: Arrival – Fences – Hacksaw Ridge – Hell or High Water – Hidden Figures- La La Land – Lion – Manchester By the Sea – Moonlight

Now I have to speak about the best picture nomination. I have only seen Arrival, La La Land, Manchester by the Sea and also Hell or High Water. Now for this even the films I haven’t seen I feel like all of these films deserve to be on the list based on reviews and what people have told me.

I have 2 contenders for this, two films I have seen that I cannot choose between. These are Arrival and also La La Land. Now I bloody LOVED both of these films. They were my two favorite films of last year without a doubt. Arrival was a film that just felt so new and original and a breakout of the Sci-Fi genre that incorporated elements of humor and heartbreak and had me gripped right until the final moments of the film. I left the film with it exceeding my expectations. Amy Adams is fantastic in this film. But if there’s one thing I think the Oscars have done wrong in this movie is the fact Amy Adams isn’t nominated. That shocked me. She really did deserve to be nominated for this film and the fact she hasn’t is a shame. Anyway this film really is a special film.

However, then it comes to La La Land. This film. I mean if you read my review for it you know how much this film hit me. It makes you laugh; it makes you cry. It makes you want to jump up and sing and dance. If anything what I love about this film is it made me so proud to be a filmmaker and be involved (Even partially) in this industry. Gosling and Stone bloody excel in this too. This also is a special film.

Now I really cannot choose between these two. If either Of them in I will be extremely happy. However, like I said earlier all of the films are fantastic and all deserve to be there!

So there you have it, those are 3-4 thoughts on the nominations. What did you think? Did you agree with my choices at all? Are you surprised at any of the nominations?

Now at the bottom of this post I am going to post a list of the nominations and who I think will win. I am going to skip a category or two based on if I haven’t seen any of them. Such as foreign film.

I just want to thank you all for reading and keeping up to date with my blog too. Like I said the past week or so has been really tough for me mentally but i’m going to keep up to date now! But thank you all for the support and for reading!

My next post is going to be very soon! The Next couple of days hopefully!

Thanks for reading guys!

Harry 🙂
