Pirates of the Caribbean – Dead Men Tell No Tales – Spoiler Free Review!

Hey Guys!

I’m going to jump straight into the review! I have a couple more posts written and will be posted soon, one even explaining my absence which once again I’m sorry for! Until then let’s get too it!

Now a few months ago me and 3 friends went to a screening for the new Pirates movie. Now because of an embargo we weren’t allowed to even say we have seen it! However now that has been lifted I can tell you my thoughts on this latest installment in the franchise. This review will also be spoiler free!

Johnny Depp returns as Captain Black Sparrow in this installment that sees Jack search for the trident of Poseidon whilst trying to escape from Captain Salazar played by Javier Bardem. Henry Turner (Played by Brenton Thwaites) Joins Jack along with an astronomer named Carina Smyth (Played by Kaya Scodelario). Also returning in this film is Barbossa (Geoffery Rush); Joshamee Gibbs (Kevin McNally) and also Will Turner (Orlando Bloom).

Now this film, honestly is a mixed bag for me. Whilst it has good elements and moments throughout there are also many areas where it could be improved.

What I liked about this film was its sense of adventure, its fair to say the past couple of installments got pretty dark at points and can be argued that it forgot its sense of adventure at points. Yet this filmed – for me – reinstalled the fun back into the franchise. That’s not too say it didn’t have its dark moments, it did, but there were moments were it didn’t take itself too seriously which were fun and interesting to watch. The sense of adventure is backed up by the score. The score for every one of these films have always been great. Especially the main theme composed by Hans Zimmer. It is a fantastic piece of work that always increases the pace of the movie and definitely helped with the fun aspects of the movie and is always exciting and fun to hear.

What I also enjoyed with this movie was – of course – Jack Sparrow. With each installment its safe to say that Johnny Depp always brings charm and charisma to the character and this one is no different. Whenever he is on screen its always fun and interesting to watch, this is the sane with Barbossa played by Geoffrey Rush. However, whilst these characters proved to be an asset to the film others were more of a disadvantage.

I say this because the new characters of Henry and Carina were less interesting for me to watch. Whilst both had promising stories – that many people may have read about already however I don’t want to give any spoilers! – and both actors good in their craft, I felt that at some points they lacked depth, and based around the fact these characters will be a foundation going forward in future installments I feel that they need much more development. That’s not too say they didn’t have good moments as they did, I just wish there was more development for them in the future as I didn’t much care for them at points where I should have done. I also found the final act of the movie to be somewhat disjointing in terms of Captain Salazar. For a character such as Salazar that poses a great threat and is quite frightening at points of the movie I feel that the payoff in the final act for his character was a little bit of a letdown.

All this is not too say that the film is a write off, like I said earlier there are good points and overall it is a good movie however it isn’t an exceptional one in my opinion. For a film that I was excited for based on the exciting plot points, especially with returnee Orlando Bloom, new characters and exciting set pieces, it was just a little underwhelming, with its new characters and final payoff.

I would recommend for people to see this film based on the sense of adventure and and with some fun set pieces yet if I had to rate this movie, for me it would be 6.5/10. Like I said it is interesting to watch, the score and set pieces can be fun and it also has interesting visuals however it was a little underwhelming and I didn’t care much for the characters. Dead Men Tell No Tales isn’t the worst in the franchise yet unfortunately it isn’t one of the best either.

That’s all for now guys, sorry about the wording of this review, I’m a little rusty at the moment! More post soon though!

Thanks for reading

Harry
